Our Philosophy

The Savvy Strength approach focuses on building a foundation of strength for a lifetime of athleticism.

We work to establish new patterns for the neuromuscular connection between your brain, breath, and body to train your physical body to optimize functionality and performance . Once this framework is solid and practiced, it becomes an automatic part of your movement. Then, we learn to control the movements while using our breath, and gain strength by moving through solid form and repetitions. From there, we build and add load, and eventually power and dynamism to progress into the ‘new’ athlete that we are. We aren’t returning to our ‘old body’. We are transforming and embracing our new bodies, learning not only to be a high-performing athlete, but an athlete as mother—one of the highest performing beings.

About your coach, Ellie Thompson.

Over the last 15 years I’ve worked as a NOLS instructor in Wyoming and Arizona, a field instructor for Aerie Backcountry Medicine in remote locations across the globe, and a Ski Patroller in Montana and New Zealand. In 2012, I landed a job on patrol at Bridger Bowl and began to put down roots in Bozeman, where my husband and I are raising two young daughters and the newest addition to our family - our (aspiring) avalanche pup Salsa!

One of my most rewarding adventures yet has been the transition into motherhood. I have experienced two pregnancies, two c-sections, and diastasis recti— all while teaching wilderness medicine and working as a professional ski patroller. I was anxious about my recovery and when/if I would ever return to full strength again after becoming a mom. As I moved through this new chapter in my life, I found myself deep in the study of how to reclaim my physical fitness and identity as an athlete in harmony with my new reality as a mother.

This was a catalyst to send me in the direction of what I believe I am called to do - train and coach pregnant and postpartum athletes. I aspire to be a resource and guide for other women who have similar concerns about their strength and physical capabilities during pregnancy and beyond.  Following a progressive and evidence-based method with a foundation of breath and core work allows my clients to re-learn how to build strength and power for everyday life, and mountain adventures.

"What I love about Ellie’s classes is that she is constantly reminding me to engage my core, in whatever exercise we are doing. Even 7 years out from pregnancy, my lower abs still need all the love they can get. Having Ellie consistently focus on “belly button to spine” is huge in my progress towards strengthening these muscles!"
